Its greener by train
Train travel is already one of the greenest forms of transport as well as letting you time to work or relax and allows you to arrive at your destination refreshed. But at East Midlands Trains we’re always looking for ways to make it greener.
What are we doing?
Our many environmental initiatives include introducing Energy Saving Mode onto our Meridian trains to and from London. This allows us to switch off selected engines when sitting in stations for long periods of time, meaning a reduction in noise and carbon emissions. During Energy Saving Mode, most onboard facilities will not be affected – there is slightly reduced interior lighting, no power from the at-seat sockets and limited heating and air conditioning – with full power being restored several minutes before departure.
East Midlands Trains has also cut emissions in its local train fleet by 4% during the largest trial of fuel additives anywhere in the rail industry. We have also cut energy use by over 2.5m kWh in 2009/10, a year-on-year reduction of 5.5%. Our Environment Champions at principal stations continue to help get all staff involved in projects that cut carbon emissions, reduce waste and increase recycling. Our maintenance depots have increased recycling to more than 80% by working with local waste recycling companies and improving awareness.
How can you help?
Leaving the car at home reduces your carbon footprint as well as letting you avoid the hassles of traffic congestion and expensive car parking charges. Many of our major stations such as Leicester, Nottingham and Derby offer cheaper car parking. Pedal power is another easy green option. Most of our London route stations have free bike-storage facilities with CCTV, so why not cycle to the station and leave your bike with us?
You can also help us save on paper by downloading and printing full PDF timetables for routes on our network. Even better, you can create your own personalised timetables, which can be emailed to you, or save it and print it out.
