As part of the redevelopment of Nottingham Railway Station (The Hub), a new facility for short and long stay cycle parking is opening on Wednesday 21st July 2010.
The Nottingham Railway Station Cycle Hub is located within the old ‘Milk Dock’ area of Nottingham Station and will be accessed from Station Street. It will provide a convenient and direct access to the railway station platforms and NET.
The facility will provide safe quality sheltered parking for 92 cycles that can be accessed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The area will be well-lit, with lighting columns and solar-powered LED lighting within the shelters and will be monitored by CCTV.
The facility is ideally situated along the busy cross-city cycle route with easy access to other local cycle routes including the Big Track and the southside cycle network
Cllr Jane Urquhart, Portfolio Holder for Transport & Area Working at Nottingham City Council, said: “This new Cycle Hub will be open for use by all types of cyclist – visitors and commuters. It offers a safe, quality, accessible space with direct connections to the Station, NET terminus, taxi waiting areas and local bus routes.”
The key Hub partners involved in developing the new cycle facility include Nottingham City Council, Network Rail, East Midlands Trains and East Midlands Development Agency (emda)
Karl Nevitt, Route Manager for East Midlands Trains in Nottinghamshire, said: “Our aim is to make it as easy as possible for all rail users to access our stations and trains. We are pleased to have worked with Nottingham City Council and other partners to deliver this improvement scheme, and we hope the new cycle facility will encourage even more people to travel by train.”

Nottingham’s excellence in public transport has recently been recognised at the Transport Times National Transport Awards. Councillor Jane Urquhart was presented with the award for Outstanding Contribution to Local Transport at the ceremony in Manchester on Thursday 15 July.
Cllr Jane Urquhart said: “I am delighted that Nottingham City Council has been recognised for our joined up approach to public transport strategies, from planning to operation. We have an excellent partnership with organisations like the Big Wheel, Nottingham City Transport and Trent Barton. Our bus quality partnership ensures that bus operators provide a certain level of quality which has, in turn, driven up quality of buses in the entire region.
“Nottingham has two of the country’s leading bus operators and our buses carry more people than in any other city outside London in the UK.
“Nottingham City Transport picked up the winning new customers award at the 2009 UK bus awards, and in May this year the biggest, and first area-wide, statutory bus quality partnership was launched. Nottingham has seen year-on-year increases in bus and tram use. There are now 47 million bus passengers per year in Nottingham and 10 million tram passengers. With that base from which to work, I am confident that Nottingham City is in a strong position to respond to the difficult financial climate we are now facing.”
Professor David Begg, Integrated Transport and Infrastructure Expert & Editor of Transport Times, said: “This is a special award that we present to people who have shown leadership at a local level and to celebrate success stories.
