East Midlands Trains runs first ever Green Week

Article posted on 21/04/2009

East Midlands Trains, part of the Stagecoach Group, is running its first ever Green Week this week.

The week-long environmental awareness drive is part of a Group-wide initiative designed to highlight the environmental benefits of using public transport as well as informing staff and passengers of ways in which the Stagecoach Group is reducing its own carbon footprint.  It is also a chance for the company to highlight the additional cost and time savings that can be achieved through the use of public transport.

During this week (until 24 April), East Midlands Trains will be running a number of activities for its staff and passengers including:
Green drop-in rooms at East Midlands Trains maintenance depots giving advice and information to staff on reducing environmental impact.
Teaming up with the Energy Saving Trust to provide display stands at Sheffield, Derby, Leicester, Nottingham and Lincoln stations throughout the week.  As well as giving away practical – and environmentally friendly green kits – the teams will be providing advice to customers on ways to reduce their energy use, recycle more and travel greener.
Promoting the recycling already carried out on train and trialling a newspaper collection for recycling on services as they go into St. Pancras station.
Stagecoach Group Chief Executive, Brian Souter, said: “This is a very important initiative for our company. We want to grow our business in a sustainable way, enhancing the communities in which we operate and playing our part in meeting the global challenge of climate change.
“Public transport has a crucial role to play in reducing global carbon emissions. Our research has told us that the issue of climate change is of real concern to our customers. As well as looking to save time and money, people want healthier and more environmentally friendly ways to get around.
“Taking the bus, coach, train or tram instead of commuting by car is perhaps the single most effective way for people to reduce their carbon footprint. By providing good value, reliable and convenient low-carbon travel, we believe we can attract even more customers on to Stagecoach services.”

Matt Browne, Head of Environment for East Midlands Trains commented:

“We’ve got some great initiatives planned for our staff and passengers this week.  As a company, we are continually improving our ways of working to become even greener, and we hope that our activities during this week will demonstrate this commitment to our passengers”.
