August Bank Holiday Upgrades to the East Coast Mainline

What's happening?

Network Rail are carrying out major improvement work on the East Coast Mainline over the August Bank Holiday Weekend; Saturday 24th, Sunday 25th and Monday 26th August.

The route operates from London King's Cross towards Grantham, Peterborough, Newcastle, York and Scotland.

On Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th August, the line will be closed between Peterborough and London and no trains will be able to run in either direction. On Monday 26th there will be fewer services than usual and trains will also be diverted between Doncaster and Newark North Gate.

How does this affect my East Midlands Trains journey?

The following East Midlands Trains routes will be affected as a result of the upgrade to the East Coast Main Line over the August Bank Holiday Weekend.

⚠️ Trains to/from London St Pancras

As there will be no services from London Kings Cross to the North, we expect customers who would usually travel on the East Coast Main Line will instead travel on East Midlands Trains services to/from London St Pancras.

In addition to the engineering works above there are also several football fixtures which are expected to increase the number of customers wanting to travel on our services to/from London St Pancras on Saturday 24th August:

Barnsley vs Luton Town
Fulham vs Nottingham Forest
Huddersfield Town vs Reading
Middlesbrough vs Millwall

As a result, we are expecting our services to be exceptionally busy throughout the Bank Holiday weekend.

We are doing everything we can to provide as many seats and services as possible. However, if possible we are advising passengers to avoid travelling.

If you do still travel, please be prepared for exceptionally busy services and leave extra time to complete your journey.

⚠️ Trains to/from Nottingham, Peterborough and Ely

As there will be no services from London Kings Cross to the North, we expect customers who would usually travel on the East Coast Main Line will instead travel on East Midlands Trains services from via Nottingham or Ely.

As a result, we are expecting our services to be exceptionally busy throughout the Bank Holiday weekend on the Liverpool/Nottingham/Norwich route, especially between Peterborough & Nottingham and Peterborough and Ely.

We are doing everything we can to provide as many seats and services as possible. However, if possible we are advising passengers to avoid travelling.
