East Midlands Trains customers are in for a sweet surprise tomorrow (Wednesday 16 August) when Andrew Smyth of The Great British Bake Off fame will be at Derby station to share some of his freshly-baked cupcakes.
Andrew, who was runner-up in last year’s hit BBC show and was known for his intricate piping and adventurous creations, will arrive in time for the evening rush and set up stall on the station overbridge.
Andrew, who lives locally in Derby and is a frequent traveller with East Midlands Trains down to London St Pancras and up to Sheffield, is looking forward to it. He said: “It will be a real pleasure to surprise customers at Derby station.
“I’m planning to give away 200 cupcakes which will be a big undertaking but will be totally worth it to sweeten customers' onward journeys and I’m looking forward to taking a couple of selfies with them too! The people of Derby really got behind me during Bake Off so it's really rewarding to give a little something back.
"I regularly travel with East Midlands Trains down to London and know that sometimes it can be tiring to commute at the end of a long day. That's why I'm so pleased to help with the Little Things campaign to bring a smile to customers' faces."
Kate Squires, Head of Marketing for East Midlands Trains, said: “What better way to brighten up our customers’ day than with delicious homemade cupcakes baked by local hero and East Midlands Trains regular, Andrew Smyth.
“The little things can really make a difference and that’s why we’ll be out and about at different stations on the patch throughout August with more treats like vouchers, first class upgrades and free coffee giveaways.
At the same time as the cupcakes are being handed out, East Midlands Trains will hold a competition on Facebook (facebook.com/eastmidlandstrains) to encourage customers to tag a friend who deserves a home-made cake of their choice baked by Andrew.
Andrew’s giveaways at Derby are part of East Midlands Trains’ Little Things campaign that seeks to improve customers’ experience of their whole journey with extra touches like giving away gifts at stations, scrapping booking fees and offering faster Sunday services to London.
