Children’s artwork and the work of green fingered Parish Councillors have led to Matlock Bath Railway Station being shortlisted for a Best Station award.
A set of artwork depicting local scenes of Matlock Bath has been produced by children from Matlock Bath Holy Trinity Primary School. These colourful and vibrant scenes have been installed inside the station waiting room to be enjoyed by passengers whilst waiting for their train. These scenes are complemented by a pair of images adorning the platform fence and exterior of the waiting room welcoming people to Matlock Bath station.
Amanda Mee Head teacher at Matlock Bath Holy Trinity Primary School said “the children really enjoyed being part of the project and as a school we feel it is important to be involved in community projects”.
Green fingered Parish Councillors, who adopted the station in January, have also recently installed a set of barrel planters along the platform and station entrance area. The planting barrels have been purchased and installed by the Parish Council and the plants grown by children from Matlock Bath Holy Trinity Primary School. The station adopters are now able to water the plants using a sustainable water supply from a pair of water containers which collect rainwater from the roof of the waiting room.
Rob Burton, Station Manager for East Midlands Trains, said: “We’re really pleased with all the hard work put in by the volunteers and the school children in brightening up Matlock Bath station. It’s great that this has all been done in time for the summer holidays to ensure even more of our passengers can see the improvements made at the station. It’s a real credit to everybody involved that the station has been shortlisted in this year’s Best Station Awards and we’re all looking forward to seeing whether Matlock Bath wins the top prize at the awards!”.
These projects along with a new access ramp into the waiting room have seen Matlock Bath qualify as a finalist in the ‘Most Improved Station’ category in the East Midlands Trains Best Station Awards. Matlock station has also successfully reached the final of Most Improved Station and Best Small Station at the East Midlands Trains’ Best Station Awards, the results of which will be announced in September.
The children’s artwork project has been funded by the Community Rail Small Grants Fund and the water containers by the Designated Community Rail Development Fund, both grants are administered by the Association of Community Rail Partnerships (ACoRP).
