East Midlands Trains Helps to Host Europe's First Ever Train HACKATHON

  • Europe’s first HackTrain leaves St Pancras on Friday evening
  • Start of a 3-day event with 40 of Europe’s best developers

Passengers travelling on the 19.57 from St Pancras to Sheffield on Friday 27 March will see the start of Europe’s first ever HackTrain as 40 hackers join the East Midlands Trains service for the first leg of a three day unique event that will see the creation of revolutionary concepts by a team of top hackers.

The HackTrain will see 40 of Europe’s best developers starting their journey on East Midlands Trains, using the London to Sheffield service as a mobile office as they work against the clock to create start-ups, apps and prototypes that can be presented in front of CEOs and investors in a bid to become the HackTrain champion.

Taking place across three days and covering four different cities, the hackers will visit London, Sheffield, York and Edinburgh before returning to Sheffield on the evening of Sunday 29 March for the final presentations and judging.  As one of the transport sponsors, East Midlands Trains will also be helping to judge the Hackathon.

Joe Parrish, Customer Experience Manager for East Midlands Trains, said: “We’re really looking forward to welcoming the team of hackers onto our train. We know from customer feedback that people find the train a great environment to work on, and it’s great to think that people can tap into our on-board WiFi and come up with some great ideas on route from London to Sheffield.”

River Tamoor Baig, Programme Manager, added: “I can’t say enough how excited we all are to be working with East Midlands Trains. This is a great opportunity for the fast growing hacker community to work with the rail industry in creating new innovative solutions that ultimately help improve the passenger experience.”

Sponsored by Bloomberg; East Midlands Trains and Virgin Trains East Coast are the transport sponsors for the event and will carry the team of hackers around the UK as they race against time to come up with the best idea.
