East Midlands Trains was recognised as best in the industry for safety, for the third year running at the prestigious National Rail Awards held at Grosvenor House Hotel in London last night (Thursday 19th September).
The approach the company, alongside its partners, Network Rail, the Samaritans, British Transport Police and ASLEF takes to ‘Taking ownership of suicide on our railway’ was highlighted as the best in the country. Judges were impressed by the proactive approach taken by the company to tackle this emotive issue.
East Midlands Trains has worked closely with partners on developing training and publications, creating innovative campaign awareness initiatives and has facilitated high profile fund and awareness raising events.
By working as part of the Suicide Prevention Group (NSPG) the company lobbied the introduction of post-vention initiatives, resulting in the introduction of a joint training package and the ‘Journey to Recovery’ handbook, both of which are being rolled out on a national basis.
Managing Director of East Midlands Trains, David Horne said, "I am delighted that the efforts of our team have been recognised in what is such a crucial area of our work. Suicides on our network have a terrible impact on everyone involved. By taking control and taking a proactive approach we can make a positive difference. We're committed to continuing our work in this area to prevent suicides across the network."
East Midlands Trains was also highly commended in the large station of the year category for Sheffield station.
