East Midlands Trains announces cheaper First Class fares for Sheffield Passengers

  • Reductions in First Class travel from Sheffield and Chesterfield to London 
  • All First Class business fares to reduce by an average of 5% 
  • New fares valid from Monday 23 May 
  • First Class passengers also benefit from free WiFi, an new improved menu, and a dedicated new lounge at Sheffield

East Midlands Trains, the UK’s most punctual long distance train operator, has announced that passengers in Sheffield and Chesterfield are set to benefit from cheaper First Class fares from next Monday (23 May). The range of business fares, including First Class anytime, off peak and super off peak fares will all reduce by an average of 5%.  

Passengers in Sheffield and Chesterfield have seen some significant improvements to their train service since the start of the East Midlands Trains franchise, including: 

  • Industry leading punctuality – East Midlands Trains has been the most punctual long distance train operator since December 2008. In the past year, 93% of East Midlands Trains long distance services were on time. 
  • Faster trains – Journey times to and from Sheffield and Chesterfield to London have improved since East Midlands Trains took over the route – some Sheffield to London journey times have been cut by 20 minutes.  The fastest journey time from London to Sheffield is now two hours and five minutes 
  • More frequent trains to London – following a successful collaboration with South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive and Yorkshire Forward, East Midlands Trains launched a second train per hour to/from London in December 2009 operating six days a week (Mondays-Saturdays) 
  • Station improvements – The award-winning Sheffield station now boasts a new, dedicated First Class lounge, and all other waiting areas and toilets have been significantly improved as a result of East Midlands Trains’ £10 million station refurbishment programme 
  • Refurbished trains – East Midlands Trains is in the process of a full £6 million refurbishment of its Meridian trains which operate between Sheffield and London.  The refurbished trains will offer greater comfort throughout with luxury leather seats in First Class 
  • Reliable on-board WiFi – all trains to London are now equipped with on board WiFi which is free for First Class passengers (a small charge applies in Standard Class) 
  • A new and improved menu – Launched in April following feedback from passengers, East Midlands Trains’ new First Class on board menu features great value meals such as fresh soup, priced at just £2.95, and the East Midlands Ploughmans, priced at £4.95.

“We’ve proud to remain the UK’s most punctual train operator – a record that has been unbeaten since December 2008 – and we’re now delivering high levels of customer service to our passengers.  Business passengers travelling on our trains to London have access to two trains an hour to the Capital, as well as added extras such as First Class lounges at both Sheffield and St Pancras stations, complimentary reliable on-board WiFi, a great value all day menu and improved trains through our £6 million Meridian refurbishment programme.

“However, we want to make sure that we remain the number one choice for people travelling between South Yorkshire and London, so from Monday, we’ll be offering even cheaper First Class fares to London with all of our business fares reduced by an average of 5% to make sure that our passengers get the best value for money no matter when they travel!”
