East Midlands Trains customers urged to plan ahead for bumper weekend of sport

  • Three major sporting events in Manchester on Saturday
  • Rugby World Cup 2015 match at Leicester on Sunday lunchtime
  • East Midlands Trains providing additional services and longer trains
  • All customers urged to plan their journey and leave plenty of time to reach their destination

East Midlands Trains is reminding all customers travelling this weekend that a bumper weekend of sport, particularly in Manchester and Leicester, means services are likely to be busier than normal and customers should leave extra time to complete their journey.

Trains to and from Manchester are expected to be busier than normal on Saturday as three major sporting events will be taking place from the late afternoon onwards. The Super League Grand Final kicks off at Old Trafford at 6pm and is closely followed by the Rugby World Cup 2015 match between England and Uruguay at Manchester City Stadium from 8pm. In addition, World Championship Boxing takes place at Manchester Arena.

East Midlands Trains will be providing more than 2,000 additional seats before and after the events from Manchester Piccadilly. There will also be extra staff on hand in Manchester and elsewhere on the network, to help all customers get where they need to go.

On Sunday, Rugby World Cup 2015 returns to Leicester’s King Power Stadium. The match kicks off at midday and trains are expected to be busier than usual, particularly those early on Sunday morning. East Midlands Trains will be providing almost 2,000 seats from London St Pancras International before 9.30am as well as additional and longer trains from north of Leicester. Customers are advised to leave plenty of time to complete their journey while also bearing in mind the early kick off time.

Neil Micklethwaite, Customer Experience and Commercial Director for East Midlands Trains, said: “This will be a very exciting weekend for supporters and we are looking forward to helping everyone travel safely and conveniently this weekend.

“We are providing additional services and running many trains with additional carriages across the network. We will also have extra staff available to assist customers but we strongly advise customers to plan their journey before leaving and leave plenty of time to reach their destination.

"Whether customers are travelling to watch the World Cup, Super League Grand Final or travelling for any other reason we're looking forward to helping everyone have a safe and convenient journey."
