East Midlands Trains help customers to celebrate Queen’s 90th birthday


  • Events taking place over 10th, 11th and 12th June at several stations
  • Derby, Leicester, Nottingham, Sheffield, Kidsgrove and Skegness all joining in with the celebrations
  • East Midlands Trains working with Virgin Trains to host joint events at Stoke and Crewe
  • Customers can look forward to tea parties, live music, competitions, children’s activities and charity fundraisers such as the ‘Royal Bake Off’ at Sheffield
  • Part of the nationwide ‘Station to Station Queen’s Celebration’ offering rail customers and communities the chance to celebrate historic occasion

Customers travelling with East Midlands Trains over 10th, 11th and 12th June can look forward to a host of special events and celebrations as part of HM The Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations.

A range of East Midlands Trains stations are taking part in the celebrations, organised as part of the nationwide ‘Station to Station Queen’s Celebrations’, and designed to offer rail customers and local communities the chance to celebrate this historic occasion.

The events taking place across the East Midlands Trains network are:

Kidsgrove - Friday 10th June (10.30am – 2pm) 

In partnership with North Staffordshire Community Rail Partnership, a Summer Garden Party will be held at the station hosted by Kidsgrove station volunteers and the station’s café ‘A Spotter Tea’. There will be tea and cakes, sponsored by Kidsgrove Tesco for customers and the local community, garden tours and gardening advice, flower seed packs and also East Midlands Trains goody bags for the children, plus a free prize draw for East Midlands Trains rail tickets to London.

Sheffield – Saturday 11th June and Sunday 12th June  

There will also be an exhibition from Sheffield University School of Architecture at the station showcasing futuristic town centre designs to help celebrate past and future and musical interludes with the Salvation Army Band playing on Sunday.

The events at Sheffield have been named “The Royal Delight” and will feature the ‘Great Sheffield Royal Bake Off’ on Saturday morning which is being hosted in partnership with local charity partner St Lukes Hospice. Staff from East Midlands Trains at Sheffield are all signed up to take part in the competition with over 20 people volunteering to don their aprons to support this good cause. All cakes will be judged by a VIP guest from St Lukes followed by some serious eating!

Nottingham – Saturday 11th June and Sunday 12th June 

A range of different activities will be taking place at Nottingham over the weekend including ‘Dave and the Buskers’ playing live on the station concourse, a children’s ‘decorate a crown’ area, lots of competitions and a chance to tweet a picture with a Queen lookalike.

Derby – Saturday 11th June (10am – 4pm) 

A street party with an afternoon tea served by ‘the Queen’ will take place on the overbridge at Derby station between 10.00am and 4pm. Local companies Hi Tea and Oliver’s will be providing tea and cake pops and East Midlands Trains’ very own Royal chef will be making cucumber sandwiches. There will also be live music from the Derbyshire Hospital Band and a charity tombola with some great prizes in aid of the Railway Children’s Charity. In addition, the Motor Neurone Disease Association, will be collecting donations for their Tea4MND campaign.

Leicester – Saturday 11th June 

Strawberries and cream will be served to rail customers over the afternoon of the 11th June.

Skegness – Saturday 11th June (10am-2.30pm) 

At Skegness, the Poacher Line Community Rail Partnership will be providing lots of "platform fun" to celebrate. There will be a children’s entertainer and face-painters, cupcakes for customers, the Skegness Silver Band will be playing. SLAPDASH (the South Lincolnshire Appalachian Dance Show) will be providing dancing and music.

Joint activity will also take place with Virgin Trains at Stoke and Crewe and Longport stations. Volunteer Allison Dias will be hosting a pop up shop at Stoke station to showcase community work on Improving Green Spaces, including North Staffordshire Line stations. There will also be celebration bunting up at stations all along the North Staffordshire route and Alsager volunteers will be handing out sweet treats at their station to customers on the morning of 10th June.
