Rail passengers in Nottinghamshire are being urged to check before they travel this coming bank holiday weekend with engineering work set to take place on the network.
The bridge on Station Road in Hucknall, which has been closed to road users since 4 June, will be replaced over the August bank holiday as part of the Railway Upgrade Plan, meaning no rail services on the Robin Hood line with a bus replacement service in operation. While the railway is closed, some track maintenance is also taking place.
From Saturday, 27 August and throughout the weekend, East Midlands Trains Robin Hood Line services will be diverted and will not call at Bulwell, Hucknall and Newstead, with buses running from Nottingham to Kirkby in Ashfield to serve these stations. Trains will still run to a revised timetable between Nottingham, Mansfield and Worksop.
Services will resume as normal on Tuesday, 30 August, with rebuilding work on the new bridge, which usually takes over 9,000 vehicles a day, to continue until the road reopens on 30 October.
Gary Walsh, Network Rail’s area director for the East Midlands, said: “Replacing this bridge will make the transport network in Hucknall more robust and reliable, with the project planned to minimise disruption. Station Road bridge is 140-years-old and the time was right to invest in a new, better structure. I thank those who have been affected by the bridge closure for their patience during the project which will ultimately provide a better transport network for road and rail users.”
Ian Smith, operations director for East Midlands Trains, said: “This is a vital piece of work taking place on our rail network, and we have worked with Network Rail to minimise disruption to our customers so far. However, there will be changes to services over the August Bank Holiday with a replacement bus service running on our Robin Hood line between Nottingham and Kirkby in Ashfield. The vast majority of other services across the East Midlands Trains’ network will continue to run as normal during the bank holiday weekend. Services to and from London will operate as normal on Saturday, 27 and Monday, 29 August.
On Sunday, 28 August only, all services to and from London will start and terminate at Luton with replacement bus services running between Luton and London. Customers are advised to check the timetable in advance at eastmidlandstrains.co.uk Services on all other East Midlands Trains routes will be unaffected.
