Market Harborough barrow crossing closure

Information for customers regarding the planned closure of Market Harborough barrow crossing

During September 2018, the barrow crossing at Market Harborough will be permanently closed.

What is a barrow crossing?

Barrow crossings are foot crossings, at track level and are an outdated method of crossing from one platform to another. They date from a time when, regrettably, the needs of less mobile customers were not taken into account.

The barrow crossing at Market Harborough is the last remaining crossing of its kind on the Midland Main Line, which carries passengers between London St Pancras International and Sheffield at speeds of up to 125 miles per hour.

Why is it being closed now?

East Midlands Trains and Network Rail together want to make the railway a safer place for everyone.

Earlier this year, the first phase of the multi-million pound redevelopment of Market Harborough station was completed when the new car park at the station opened. For the first time, this created step free access to both platforms.

As a result, the majority of rail users which used to require assistance from station staff at Market Harborough when crossing the railway using the barrow crossing are now instead making arrangements to be picked up or dropped off from the step-free entrance to the platform to or from which their train arrives or departs.

If customers need to cross between platforms, what should they do now?

Step free access is now available to both platforms, either via the ticket office for platform 1 or via the new car park for platform 2.

Services to the north, including Leicester, Nottingham, Sheffield and Derby depart from Platform 1.

Services to London and stations south of Market Harborough depart from platform 2.

Customers are asked to check which platform they need before arriving at the station.

However, if a customer does need assistance to change platforms, East Midlands Trains are happy to help. Customers will be provided with a free fully accessible taxi between platforms. Simply speak to a member of staff or use a Help Point in the station.

Is this permanent?

The barrow crossing will be closed permanently, yes.

However, in summer 2019 and as part of the wider Market Harborough improvements, a brand new footbridge and lifts will be installed linking the two platforms. When this is in place, it will provide simple and convenient access to both platforms for all customers.
