We advertise our Trainee Driver roles once a year. This is usually between October and January. The best way to stay informed about these roles is to register your interest through our email service, and we will notify you when we are next recruiting:
You do not need any prior railway experience to become a driver. However, you must be at least 21 years old and hold a GCSE grade C/Level 4 or equivalent in Maths and English. The same level in IT would be beneficial, however if you do not hold this, we can support you in achieving this if you are offer a place on our course.
EMR have played a leading role in the development of the new national Train Driver level 3 apprenticeship standard which was published in June 2018. If you are successful through the process, you will be automatically enrolled onto the apprenticeship when you join. You can find out more about the apprenticeship here.
The application process is a lengthy one; however it is to ensure that we are getting the right people into our driver seats. The process consists of the following (other methods of assessing may also be used):
1: Stage 1 OPC psychometric testing
2: EMR Assessment Day (You will be assessed on group and individual activities)
3: Competency based Driver Manager Interview
4: Stage 2 OPC psychometric testing
If you are successful at all steps in the process, we will put you in a Talent Pool for up to 2 years. When a vacancy becomes available at your chosen location, we will be able to pick up the phone and make you an offer.
